WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The swine flu outbreak spread to 11 states Wednesday amid the confirmation of the first U.S. death in Texas.
As of Wednesday, some 100 schools were closed to help contain the spread. Total confirmed cases in the U.S. rose to nearly 100.
The World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland raised its alert to just one level below a global pandemic.
"It really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic," said WHO director general Margaret Chan.
