CHANGGANG, China- About 100 farmers in the southern Chinese village of Changgang were sealed off by police from the outside world for about a week because of the H1N1 flu epidemic because a visitor from California showed symptoms of the H1N1 flu.

Quarantines and medical detentions were among the extreme measures that Chinese officials took to slow the spread of the flu virus. China isolated entire planeloads of people entering the country if anyone showed flu-like symptoms. Authorities also canceled classes with any suspicion of the flu and ordered students and teachers to stay home.

China was the only country that took such measures through the summer and now Chinese and foreign health officials say they may have helped slow the spread of the worlds most populated country.
