ST. CLOUD – John Albert Sorensen, who was shot by a Stearns County deputy during an arrest after an undercover drug bust, filed for a federal lawsuit because he feels his civil rights were violated.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court and accuses former Lt. Dave McLaughlin that he improperly used deadly force during Sorensen’s arrest. Sorensen was shot once in the back during a March 13 undercover drug deal that occurred in the McStop parking lot.
Sorensen pleaded guilty to a second-degree controlled substance crime resulting from the methamphetamine purchase. He recently was sentenced to three years in prison. McLaughlin retired from the sheriff’s department earlier this year.
