A current Direct TV ad that is running all over the airwaves lately is stirring up some controversy.
The ad is an infamous scene from “Tommy Boy” featuring a silly Chris Farley doing his famous scene singing “fat guy in a little coat.”
Intermittently, David Spade interjects pitching the lines about how he would rather be watching Direct TV.
Within the pitch he refers to Farley as “tons of fun.”
Many people believe that this ad is distasteful and is done too soon after Farley’s death.
I disagree. This is not distasteful at all.
“Tommy Boy” is an American classic and Chris Farley is one of my favorite actors (“Almost Heroes,” top five all time).
All the ad does is imply that if you get Direct TV, you get access to great movies and scenes like this one in Tommy Boy, which is true.
So I do not understand why people would even care at all why Farley was in the ad.
People are also angry at David Spade for doing the ad as well. Why shouldn’t he? He is just trying to make some money, using his likeness from the movie, to sell some ad.
Seriously, who really cares?
I mean, because the comment was about Farley being fat, that’s what is really ticking people off?
That’s what he did for a living. He made fun of himself being fat.
So what’s the big deal if a director kept that rolling even after he died.
I mean, in the scene he is using his weight to make a joke about being a fat guy in a little coat.
The scene is pure genius.
The lines from the movie are often quoted by numerous fans, and likely many people who probably do not even know what movie they are from.
So what’s the harm of using a popular scene to make an advertisement?
Direct TV has been doing it with lots of other scenes. Just because Farley is dead doesn’t mean they shouldn’t use this one any differently.
In fact, kudos to Direct TV. I loved being able to see Farley in this ad.
The fact is he was an immensely popular actor who, instead of being self conscious of his weight problem, used it to his advantage as an actor.
There are very few actors who could do that as well as he did, and putting him in this ad only made us remember how great of an actor he truly was.
So people, stop complaining about DirectTV doing ads with dead comedians in them.
It really should not be as big of a deal as you’re making it to be.
Farley was a comedy god, and should be still thought of as such.
He died tragically, but his legend lives on, and this ad does a good job of allowing us to reminisce about the good old days when he was alive.
If David Spade, his best friend, side-kick and co-star in numerous flicks of the 90s, can allow the ad, and even participate in the advertisment, then we can be allowed to enjoy it ourselves.
I think Farley himself, god rest his soul, would not care in the slightest about the ad, and likely would encourage it.
