Like a lightning bolt to the top of a DeLorean, the Huskies bats got a thousand-jigawatt blast to their offensive production when they capped off a series split with a punishing 13-4 victory Monday.
Postponing what was to be a weekend pair of doubleheaders, Sunday and Monday the baseball team split the doubleheaders both days at Dick Putz Field against NCC rival Augustana (14-14, 3-3 NCC).
The first game was a pitcher's duel between Augustana's Elliot Gleason (4-0) and SCSU's Ben Johnson (2-3). SCSU jumped to an early lead when Ryan Sturm reached base on an error and later advanced home on an overthrow from Gleason to the first basemen.
Gleason gave up his only earned run in the third when senior shortstop Dan Skog led off the inning with a single, only to be advanced by consecutive walks and then scored on a sacrifice fly from first-basemen Louis Lang.
Gleason would finish the day pitching 6 innings, giving up only 5 hits and 3 walks, while tallying 3 strikeouts. Johnson suffered the close loss.
"Some base running mistakes really cost us the first game," Skog said. "Ben (Johnson) really pitched a good game."
Augustana came back in the fourth inning, scoring all their runs on homeruns Ryan Kessinger and Jeff Green each tallied a pair of RBI.
It put the Vikings up 4-2 and was enough to put the Huskies away. Bryce Ahrendt came in to close out the save in the seventh for Augustana.
SCSU's Johnson finished 5.2 innings, giving up 5 hits, 3 earned runs and 3 walks.
He struck out 5. Mitchell Staley came in for relief, pitching 1.1 innings, striking out 2 and giving up only 1 hit.
The second game Sunday brought about a spark in the Huskies bats.
"Ryan (Carlson) pitched well, and we got a lot of timely hits," Skog said.
St. Cloud again struck first when Kyle Johnson singled in Eric Brown, in the first inning.
Augustana then came back in the third inning, when their biggest bat, Mike Loberg, knocked in a run to knot it up. D.J Juhlke then hit in another runner to take the lead.
