The SCSU Environmental & Technological Society (ETS Club) put on this year's Technical Challenge all day Friday in the Atwood Ballroom.
The event was planned and organized by SCSU students involved with the ETS club. Its motto is "linking the natural and human-made worlds," and was shown throughout the day.
Local high school and junior high students involved with technology education came to SCSU to compete and demonstrate their technological abilities. The so-called "hand on-minds on" event taught students how to use the knowledge they have learned in the classroom and in the real world.
The day started out with ETS Jeopardy. Then each group of students was given an hour to design and build assigned projects. Each group was able to make a spaghetti tower, a ping-pong catapult and paper crane. After the allotted time, students from the ETS Club judged the projects on categories such as design, creativity, height, strength and accuracy.
Students were also given a tour of campus and an in-depth look at Headley Hall. They were able to see labs they may use in the future, if they decide to attend SCSU. After the tour, students and teachers ate pizza and pop, provided by the ETS Club.
Some students brought CO2 race cars, which were made in their classrooms, and then raced against one another. Trophies and certificates were awarded to groups of students who placed in each category. The highest honor was awarded to Foley Intermediate, who were the champions for the 2007 Technical Challenge.
At the end of the day, students helped with the clean-up of the event. The Technical Challenge brought a wide variety of age groups and personalities with a focus on learning.
