Truth, Justice and the American way are words of my youth that came to mind this Friday.

I was driving past Dairy Queen and saw a man wearing the Superman logo standing in front of flag that was waving in the breeze. It brought back visions of hope. It brought back the memory of how our country pulled together during a crisis called the Cold War.

Thinking about what Superman stood for, I started pondering what these most famous words meant to me and what they possibly mean to the rest of the world.

Truth; Nietzsche states there are no facts, just interpretations. Does this also relate to the truth?

I believe the only way a person can be true is to themselves. Just like there are two sides to a coin and an edge, there are two polar opposite sides to an issue surrounded by an edge of middle truths.

Justice: Our nation is purported to be built on justice for all, but we all know that was lip service. Justice goes to the highest bidder, and if someone takes matters into their own hands, they are called vigilantes. Yet, our justice system is wrought with individuals who should be convicted and removed from society, and because they can afford it, they buy their way out with high priced lawyers and plea bargains.

The American way: Lenin stated that imperialism is the last stage of capitalism, and each empire throughout history has proven this is a sad truth mankind has not yet realized.

The subjugation of people by another used to go by a harsher word: slavery. Now we call it out-sourcing. If the price to do business is too high in one country, we just move the business to another country that does not have labor laws forbidding 80 hour weeks or child labor.

Yet, even after musing over these points, I did find it refreshing to know this man was willing to shoulder all this, and proudly say we can overcome. We just have to believe Superman will come and save the day again.
