The Huskies baseball team handed Minnesota State, Mankato their first conference loss of the season Friday afternoon.

The SCSU baseball team (9-19 overall; 4-6 NCC) traveled to MSU (28-6 overall; 8-1 NCC), where they earned a split in the doubleheader, winning the first game 4-3, and then losing the second game in an extra inning by the same score.

In game one, scoring opened in the second inning when DH Kirby Marquart blasted a pitch over the right field wall.

MSU struck back, scoring all 3 of their runs in the bottom of the third. Two hits and 2 errors filled out the MSU score sheet, leaving them with 3 runs (2 earned). SCSU starting pitcher Ben Johnson (2-3) earned a no-decision, pitching 5.1 innings, striking out five Mav batters and giving up 9 hits.

In the top of the fifth, a 2-run homer by Nate Johnson knotted it back up at threes apiece. Mitch Staley came in for relief with 1 out in the bottom of the sixth.

Staley earned the win when MSU ace Dane Secott (8-1) left two runners on base with only one out in the top of the seventh. Dan Gaughan and Kroc hit back-to-back singles before the Mavs pulled Secott. With 2 outs, Maverick reliever Nick Fellman then struck out Dan Skog, who reached first on the wild pitch, and Gaughan touched home for the go-ahead run.

Fellman finished his 2/3 of an inning by striking out Resser, who again had to be gunned out at first after a wild third strike got by the catcher.

Maverick starter Secott broke the MSU school record for career strikeouts with 242. Friday, he tallied 7 against the Huskies, giving up only 5 hits and 3 earned runs (1 unearned) in his first season loss.

Adam McGrane came in for his third save this season. McGrane is 3-for-3 in save opportunities. McGrane has given up 0 hits and struck out 4 in final inning action.

The second game brought another close decision. MSU scored in the first and second innings on a Gonzalez bunt single (hitting in Danelson) and an errant throw from third to first, respectively.

The third inning opened the Huskies scoring when Louis Lang and Marquart got a hold of a Jon Bjellend (6-1) pitch sparking a 3 run inning. Ben Anderson, Thompson and Kroc were credited for an RBI apiece.

The SCSU lead was brief, as in the bottom of that inning, Pat Ottum hit in a run to knot it up.

Bjellend resigned for the day after going 6.2 innings, giving up 3 earned runs and 8 strikeouts. Fellman (1-0) would again face the Huskies for the remainder of the seventh and one extra inning holding before the Mavericks won. Scott Sand was the losing pitcher when he faced three batters in the eighth before Josh Simon knocked in the winning run.

The Huskies and Mavericks are set to finish the series Sunday at Dick Putz Field.
