The SCSU men's and women's track and field teams began competition after being forced to adjust their schedules due to unseasonable spring weather.
The Huskies typically compete in one meet per week, but have seen action in three different meets the past week with meets recently added on.
"It's a little different than what we're used to," freshman decathlete R.J. McGinnis said. "Usually, you're a little broken down after a meet so you get some time to recover, but now, you just have to carry it right into the next competition and the next one after that."
McGinnis has competed in a variety of events for the Huskies thus far in the young outdoor season. He placed fifth in the decathlon at the Division II Challenge at Emporia State in Emporia, Kan., last Sunday. On Wednesday, he threw the discus and the javelin and competed in the vault for the Huskies at the Cobber Twilight Meet hosted by Concordia-Moorhead. He also filled in for injured senior Jared Lazer in the 4x400 meter relay.
"As a decathlete, you do a lot of events, and you can be plugged in a lot of different places," he said. "I like being able to fill and do that for the team."
McGinnis placed second in the 110-meter hurdles Saturday at the Bison Classic hosted by North Dakota State University. He also placed sixth in the long jump and competed in pole vault.
McGinnis said head coach Seth Mischke and assistant coach Jason Koch help him plan which events to compete in each weekend.
"I talk with Jas (Koch) and Seth and look at how I've been competing," he said. "We look at where I can improve the most, and then decide what to do each meet."
Two-time NCC 400-meter hurdle champion Jared Lazer began the season with a second place finish in the event at the Division II Challenge, but has been injured and unable to compete since.
Marcus Jenkins has been a consistent performer for the Huskies in the 110-meter hurdles. Jenkins placed sixth in the event at the Division II Challenge, second at the Cobber Twilight Meet and third at the Bison Classic.
