It seems like all children want these days are iPods and cell phones, but some just want a safe place to sleep at night.

So many people take that for granted, said SCSU junior Jill Nelson, while observing the Voice of Hope quilt.

The quilt was on display in Atwood last week to raise awareness about domestic violence and to offer hope to those experiencing it, said Lee LaDue, coordinator of sexual assault services at SCSU's women's center.

"It (the quilt) is a different way to learn about an issue," LaDue said. "It reaches a different audience."

Each square on the quilt was created by a domestic violence survivor to illustrate hope, said Deb Schroeder, coordinator of community education and marketing at Anna Marie's Alliance, a local shelter for battered women and children.

Nelson said she was surprised by the art and inspirational words on the quilt.

"I am surprised that the pictures are so colorful and happy," Nelson said. "I used to draw similar pictures when I was a kid, so I feel like I could relate to them, but I probably could never understand what they are going through."

The quilt gives hope to the younger survivors, Nelson said, because there are so many different ages of women that contributed to the quilt.

"There are so many people hurting in this world. It's nice to see there are people making a difference and possibly preventing this from happening to others," Nelson said.

Statistically, one in three women will experience relationship violence at some point in their life, Schroeder said.

"It (domestic violence) crosses all boundaries of race, religion, social status, location and age," Schroeder said.

Domestic violence is not necessarily physical violence, but includes verbal, emotional and sexual abuse, Schroeder said.

LaDue said domestic violence affects SCSU students, as well as other college students.

"Domestic violence is a huge problem everywhere. Campus is no different from any other community," LaDue said.
