Set the bar high during college

To quote my favorite Doors song, "This is the end," my final contribution to this campus is within this column.

Today, I am preparing to take that giant leap for mankind and enter the real world.

Before I go I would like to share my journey to this place and time, but the 27 years would take too long.

James Dean said, "Dream as if you will live forever. Live life like you will die today."

No matter what your dream is, never give up on it. Life is a jumble of lateral moves that lead you to your goal.

Take the step back with the same fervor as you would for the leap forward. It enriches and nourishes you.

If your dream comes true quickly, then the dream was not worth it. Living each day to the fullest as though it is your last is the best way to die satisfied you made your life worth something.

During your tenure here, I want to challenge you to set the bar high enough that it cannot be seen without the Hubble telescope.

While here, touch others and be touched by them. Let them into your heart and listen to their silent screams for understanding. Hear their cries and hold them through their pain.

Revel in their joy and share your darkest secret with someone else. The lifting of this burden will allow you to grow more than any class can teach you.

When in need of comfort, talk to someone new, because they too need comfort. Do not bottle stuff up inside, because it is a detriment to your spiritual health, and this will lead to physical ailments no medicine can cure.

Those who compartmentalize their pain eventually snap, and the unfortunate consequences injure others. Be active in the community around you, and make it your mission to change someone's life each day.

A smile, compliment or offering to buy the cup of coffee for the next person in line without knowing them falls under the banner of random acts of kindness.

Thank you, SCSU, for all you have given me.
