Issue date: 4/30/07 Section: Sports
The SCSU baseball team (12-21, 6-8 NCC) beat up the competition this past week, taking down St. John's University (16-14) by a score of 7-3 and sweeping the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (13-30, 3-10) 5-3 and 6-1 in a doubleheader Saturday.

Against St. John's, SCSU got on the board in the first inning thanks to Bruce Thompson singling in Joe Kroc from third.

The Huskies would take command in the second inning, scoring 4 runs. Kroc got his second RBI of the game after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Thompson singled to center field, driving in Dan Skog and Nate Johnson. Kroc later scored on a throwing error to put the Huskies up 5-0.

St. John's got 1 run back in their portion of the second from back-to-back doubles that cut the lead to 5-1.

The Huskies quickly answered with a triple in the next inning by Kyle Resser. He later scored on a wild pitch.

No one would score again until the bottom of the sixth inning when St. John's played small ball, scoring a runner from third on a ground out.

The Huskies answered in the top of the sixth, thanks to a lead-off home run by Louis Lang. St. John's added a meaningless run in the bottom of the ninth.

Eric Collins (1-1) got the win for the Huskies, going 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and only 1earned run. The Huskies got 11 hits and snapped a three-game losing streak.

The Huskies returned to NCC action against Minnesota-Duluth at Bulldog Field in Duluth.

In the first game of the twinbill, the Huskies got on the board in the second inning after Dan Gaughan hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Thompson.

SCSU added to the 1 run lead in the top of the fifth after Kroc singled in Skog.

The Huskies extended the lead in the top of the sixth after Thompson knocked a lead-off home run to left field to put the score at 3-0.

All the work the Huskies did would be erased in the bottom of the sixth inning. Minnesota-Duluth scored 3 runs and had a runner at third with only 1 out. Mitchell Staley came in relief and struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
