Saturday afternoon turned out to be the perfect day for the SCSU rowing team's Husky Sprint Regetta. Rowers from Winona State University, Macalaster and SCSU competed against each other during 12 events consisting of female, male and mixed boats. The morning races were 2K sprints, started between the Highway 23 and St. Germain bridges, and ended just past Wilson Park. Afternoon races were 500 meter sprints.
Much teamwork is necessary for the sport of rowing, in and out of the water. The coxswain, the person at the back of the boat, instructs the timing of rowers' strokes, when to get out of the water, take off the oars and when to lift or set down the boat.
TCF Bank and St. Cloud Orthopedic sponsored the event, and SCSU student Adrienna Holden was the main coordinator. After the competition, there was a free lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and cookies for the student athletes and spectators. There was also time after lunch designated for community rowing.
