Wednesday afternoons fill the campus mall in-between Atwood and the Performing Arts building with music performed by students and DJs from KVSC.

Wednesday, students and staff could listen to the sounds of Sarah Chumley, student and song writer, and her accompaniment on the guitar, Erik Karlson, jammin' out all original tunes while patrons enjoyed free nachos and water from the UPB.

The event was part of the UPB's summer entertainment plan and is called "Live on the Mall," stemming from the student showcase series, "Live at Lunch."

Chumley sang songs she has written mostly based on personal stories of college life, smoking marijuana and video games.

Chumley laughed when spoke about writing her own music.

"I wrote my first song when I was seven," Chumley said. "It was called 'My Cubby Hole.'"

She also shared a personal story and song about her mother and how her mother wrote her a letter in a different personality.

The song lyrics said, "Sarah, write me a song."

Chumley said she has always wanted to be a singer/songwriter.

She goes to school at SCSU and the Minnesota School of Business in hopes of someday having a career in the music industry, she said.

Chumley has played numerous open mic's and also has performed at "Live at Lunch," in the Quarry.

"Right now, I don't have anymore shows scheduled for in the area," Chumley said.

Karlson said he would describe the sound of the music as, "funk-try metal."

He then went on to explain the sound. "This is a combination of funk, country and metal."

Chumley laughed at the explanation told by Karlson.

"Sarah is playing a show this Saturday in Charlotte, N.C. at a place called 'The Bad Dog,'" Karlson said.

Chumley said, "I'm working on recording right now and hope to have something out next year sometime."

Chelsea Redger, UPB program advisor, said the summer events the UPB puts on are to be enjoyable for the students that are on and off campus during the summer.

"We like to provide events in the summer that are conducive to students that are here over the summer as well as events that are open to the public," Redger said.

The UPB did not have any information or names to release about July student performers but they did have information about who will be performing at "Live on the Mall" on Aug. 1, and her name is Danielle Mueller.
