To the point
Was an all-day concert honoring Princess Diana necessary?

YES
When a prominent figure in the world dies, they should be recognized. Princess Diana was one of the most popular and caring people to live on this planet.
An all-day concert, only taking up a small portion of television on VH1, aired to recognize all of the wondrous things she did, I believe is suitable for the 10th anniversary of her death.
This event was contrived by the minds of Prince William and Prince Harry, her two sons who felt her legacy should be known. Not to mention all of the artists to partake in the event did it for free.
She helped the world with studies relating to HIV/AIDS, and with that theme in mind, the proceeds of the concert went to many of the organizations she was involved with, including The National AIDS Trust and The Leprosy Mission, not to mention many others.
Artists from around the globe joined forces to help stop some of the global issues.

Viewers of VH1 were treated to a musical extravaganza Sunday as musicians ranging from Tom Jones to P. Diddy came together to perform in an all-day concert put on by Princes William and Henry of Wales to raise money for AIDS research.
The theme of their concert? To celebrate the birthday of their mother Princess Diana, who died almost 10 years ago.
OK, I get the point. Princess Diana was an amazing woman who did a lot of great things with her life and left a shockwave in the world when she abruptly died in 1997.
I can understand some sort of celebration in her memory to remind us how important she was to the world. I can also understand a charity concert to go toward AIDS research, seeing as how that was one of Diana's legacies during her life.
But is it really appropriate to combine the two in that fashion? Is it fitting to celebrate the life of Princess Diana through the lyrics of Elton John and Kanye West?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure Princess Diana's list of favorite songs didn't include "Gold Digger."
By throwing an overblown concert of this magnitude, it seems like the princes are less concerned with honoring their dead mother and more concerned about being as commercial as possible.
Therefore, this concert was not only to show the importance of Princess Diana, but also to help many organizations trying to fix a handful of the world's problems with donations and support.
