SCSU has been turned into a construction site all summer long as improvements are being made, courtesy of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU).

The MnSCU Board of Trustees announced June 20 it would be requesting $271 million from the Legislature for the 2008 fiscal year.

Money from Minnesota legislators has to be divided amongst all 32 institutions, which goes toward improving campuses statewide.

The MnSCU Board of Trustees is a 15-member board appointed by the governor.

The board sent the budget off to the Legislature, where Governor Tim Pawlenty and company will dissect the budget, before signing off on it.

The Board of Trustees meetings concluded with the decision to divide the budget between a list of 37 different campus projects statewide.

The projects, if approved, will range from new buildings being added to campuses to the demolition of buildings.

Also, much like what is taking place on SCSU campus right now, many buildings will have the opportunity to be renovated and improved.

This year's MnSCU proposal has a Brown Hall renovation project third on its 2008 priority list, with a $14.8 million projected budget.

The top two priorities on the budget for 2008 include a $110 million budget divided between all MnSCU institutions for basic campus repair and replacement projects and a $25.5 million renovation project budget to the Trafton science center on Minnesota State University, Mankato's campus.

An additional $1 million has been purposed to go to SCSU for a new Integrated Science & Engineering Laboratory Design.

Last year, Brown Hall and the math and science building were third on the priority list, receiving a combined $14 million for addition and renovation services.

Also, Riverview received $4.5 million for renovation, which concluded this year with a new roof and other additions being made to the 96-year-old building.

According to MnSCU, the request for $271 million in general obligation bond financing will be added to $76.3 million in debt service financed by the system and its institutions, totaling the final budget at $347.3 million.
