After a unanimous vote, SCSU alumnus Bob White has become the SCSU Foundation Board of Trustees chair for the 2007-08 SCSU school year.

"I am excited for this opportunity, and I think there are a lot of positive things that will come out of this," White said.

The foundation's main purpose and goal is to oversee the charitable arm of SCSU.

White was excited about his new role and said because former SCSU President Roy Saigo and new President Earl Potter has and will continue moving the university forward, the board will continue to have a good relationship with SCSU.

The board exists to help SCSU students fulfill their full academic potential by lending students a hand in paying bills.

"The foundation was founded to develop financial resources other than state and federal donations, and it originally started off as a way to support the community, but through evolution, it is now a much broader foundation," White said.

White said the foundation was started in 1959-60 when the Atwood family made the first donation to SCSU while the family lived in the SCSU alumni house on campus.

White has been in St. Cloud his whole life and lived as close as three blocks from campus as a child.

"When I lived close to campus, it was a small state school, but at the beginning of the baby boom from 1960-70 they couldn't build the dorms fast enough," White said.

He learned about the Atwood family's generosity while working on campus as a youngster in the 60s.

A nominating committee reviewed all his credentials before voting him in as new chair.

"The nominating committee looks for certain skills and they felt I had the right skills for the job and I agreed to help out," White said.

While White and the board have many goals they would like to accomplish, one main goal stood out above the rest.

"We as a foundation want to help every single student be successful and make them feel valued. They came to school here, they deserve all the help they can and our job is to support them and get more out of their learning experience," White said.
