Anne Abicht captures the essence of teamwork at athletic events, but not the way teamwork is usually seen.
Abicht is SCSU's director of athletic media relations.Over her prestigious career she has worked tirelessly in and around the athletics department to support athletes, coaches and SCSU as a whole.
Abicht has been at SCSU since January 1985. In that time she has seen the addition of three new women's sports and the change of both hockey programs to Division I.
Last June, Abicht received the prestigious Trail Blazer Award from Collegiate Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA). The Trail Blazer Award is given once a year to honor individual efforts to expand women and minority involvement both in collegiate sports and as media-relations specialists. Abicht last year was also the recipient of CoSIDA's 25-year recognition, honoring her quarter century in the profession of media relations.
Women's soccer, women's hockey and women's nordic skiing were all added to SCSU's 21 NCAA sport roster under the guidance of Abicht and her office. She stays humble; however, as she deferred the credit to her fellow 'teammates.'
"I really couldn't do it without them (media relations staff); they are what makes this job so rewarding. I love working with them and seeing these people grow as everyday as media relations specialists." Abicht said.
"Anne makes coming to work fun," said Tom Nelson, fellow media relations employee who nominated Abicht for the award. "She pioneered industry being a woman and bringing women into the field."
"Anne has been a really strong mentor to me," said Celest Stang, a fellow worker in media relations. "She is very approachable. She has been my backbone in this field since I started as a grad student."
Abicht seems to have a knack for getting grad students into the field. Within CoSIDA, many former Abicht prodigies have now made a name for themselves in sports relations. Melissa Wolf, Sarah Meier, Ryan Klinker, Chris Forman, Eric Bacher and Celest Stang all started as grad-assistants for Abicht's office.
