Fitness programs aim for variety

For the week of Sept. 10-16, the aerobic studios will have a free week of group fitness classes for students to try out, with activities ranging from yoga to pilates to cycling. Haukos said the goal of the free week is to make students aware of services the fitness program can offer.
In addition to the free week of group fitness, Haukos is also looking to get people acclimated to the facilities by offering free orientations to new students.
"We're just hoping to show people how to use all of our equipment and make people comfortable with the (Student Rec Center) building," said Haukos, who has been the director for fitness programs for 11 years. "New students can be pretty intimidated at first just because of how big the building is."
Not that Haukos needs any help making fitness a popular activity at SCSU. Since the opening of the Student Rec Center in 2005, programs for fitness have been expanded to include certified personal training, massage therapy and more than 40 group fitness classes a week.
The Fitness Center, which functions as a weight room for non-athletes at SCSU, has also seen a drastic expansion created by its move into a new facility. The center has more than 40 cardio machines, new weightlifting equipment, and more than a dozen televisions to tune in to while working out.
With more than 4,000 students purchasing passes per semester, the Fitness Center is easily the most popular aspect of the fitness programs at SCSU. However, Campus Rec Director Ron Seibring is quick to point out that administrative goals go beyond just fitness for the individual.
"We're really trying to push for socialization and interaction, in addition to fitness," Seibring said. "An important part of the college experience is to get out there and meet people in social settings. So it's important for us to have programs that push for that."
