NEAH BAY, Wash. -- A California gray whale was shot with a machine gun and harpooned Saturday morning by five people believed to be members of the Makah Tribe.
The whale did not initially die from its injuries, and Coast Guard officials created a 1,000-yard safety zone around the animal, which attempted to head back to sea Saturday afternoon. Despite aid efforts, though, the whale died.
While the tribe has various fishing rights, authorities say initial indications may show the whale was shot illegally.
