Longtime staple of the Minnesota music scene, Tim Mahoney is touring behind his most recent release, 2006's "Stay/Leave," hitting everywhere from Des Moines to Omaha as he attempts to spread his particular brand of pop-rock across the Midwest.
Mahoney's a practicing member of the old school style of getting your name out there by playing as many shows as possible and making himself accessible to fans.
Mahoney's musical career started out in the early 90s. For a handful of years, he and his friends played together as the Minneapolis group "The Blue Meenies."
Named after the evildoers from the Beatles classic "The Yellow Submarine," the Blue Meenies were known for their energetic live shows as they rocked out on campuses and dive bars here and in surrounding states.
Their particular brand of rock, with a hint of the classic garage rock sound, became the building block of Mahoney as he evolved through the years, experimenting with acoustic shows and finding his way into the quasi-indie rock sound his solo career has grown into.
Since '95, Mahoney has released five well-received records, a live album and "Tim Mahoney: The DVD Live," which is, you guessed it, a live DVD of Mahoney in concert at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis back in 2004.
His last album, "Stay/Leave," is his most successful one to date, and his largest mainstream hit. Back when there was still a Drive 105, you could be sure to find the Mahoney anthem "Theme Song" getting heavy play on the radio.
"Theme Song," an ode to the vacant, yet gorgeous women who've found the bars are the only thing they have to look forward to as their looks fade and their drunken shenanigans become less cute and more sad, seems to have hit a note with the public.
It's a vicious, catchy track no doubt snatched up by the very people it mocked, and it's one of reasons you can now find "Stay/Leave" in more than 500 Target stores in the Midwest as part of the emerging artist's program in which up and comers are given a little spotlight and a boost in making it home to your stereo via the commercial giant.
