Last Friday, UPB began its kickoff with Atwood After Dark.
For many students, Atwood was the place to be whether it was taking a picture with mascot Blizzard or eating pickles on a stick. There was not a place at the event where there wasn't a smile. The theme for the night was "School Spirit."
Melissa Kloss, Atwood After Dark coordinator, explained the meaning behind the theme.
"This year is the first year, as a committee, that we decided to go with themes. Because Atwood After Dark was during kickoff week this time, we decided that it should have something to do with school spirit." Kloss said.
UPB did just that.
It had Atwood Idol and karaoke with a live band in the Atwood Ballroom. There was Wingo, which is a game very similar to bingo. SCSU's mascot Blizzard was even there, and students had the chance to take a picture with the famous husky.
There were tables set up around the area, and people had an opportunity to make their own personalized bandannas. Also, if a person was hungry and wanted something to munch on, corn dogs, soda pop and pickles on a stick were served to satisfy their appetite.
One event was extremely popular with the crowd: Stuff a Husky.
"We did have our very own Stuff a Husky, but within the first half hour of starting the event, they were sold out," Kloss said.
With all the different activities going on in Atwood, it was difficult not to run into an enthusiastic person.
"Atwood Idol was very entertaining and fun to watch," senior Joshua Lee said.
There was not an empty seat in the entire ballroom, leaving many students with standing room only.
Atwood After Dark was thought by many to be a great success.
"This event has been our best turnout so far. It's amazing. We even had to add extra tables because people wanted to be part of all the excitement and the events," Kloss said.
Atwood After Dark is a great hit with the student community, but it is only conducted once a month.
"UPB has decided that it would be best to have Atwood After Dark only once a month due to our budget. By doing this we are able to bring bigger and better things to our fellow students to enjoy," Kloss said. "This semester we will be having Atwood After Dark four times, and next semester we will be having them five times."
Next month, UPB will be having a Hawaiian themed Atwood After Dark. This idea goes along with SCSU's homecoming theme "Escape to Paradise."
Present will be special guest, Lonei Love, and a sand castle building contest along with a number of other activities.
