"We have a lot of really exciting events going on this year at the Women's Center," said Jane Olsen, the Women's Center Director.
The center and its affiliated student organizations, Women's Action, Students for Choice, Today's Women and Students for Sexual Consent are all sponsoring special events this year promoting women's health, safety and equality.
A few of these groups have recently undergone name changes in order to stay current and attract more students.
Women's Action for Liberation and Leadership (WALL) shortened its name to Women's Action, and Campus Advocates Against Sexual Assault (CAASA) changed its name to Students for Sexual Consent.
"We're not shifting away from sexual assault, but shifting more towards promoting healthy, positive sexuality," said Amber Michel, Students for Sexual Consent chair.
Aside from new names, the Women's Center is sponsoring the Women on Wednesday series, a self-defense class, National Love Your Body Day, respect and responsibility workshops, a new women's leadership program and a new male peer education program.
The Women's Center has also just received two grants to fund these programs, one totaling $300,000, and the other $48,832.
The Women on Wednesday series, a tradition for the Women's Center, is based on the 30th anniversary of the 1977 National Women's Conference conducted in Houston, Texas.
"Women on Wednesday has always been a big part of the Women's Center," Olsen said. "Six weeks after we opened our doors 17 years ago ... we started Women on Wednesday. This program has its roots in long standing programming to highlight different women's voices."
The 1977 Plan of Action is the source of the topics for Women on Wednesday to compare women's status then to now.
"Many of those issues are still there. The agenda is incomplete," Olsen said.
Each week a new issue will be discussed based on the 26 parts of the major platform that was developed in 1977.
