Campus preachers save souls while methodically condemning all to Hell

There is something inherently funny about the first few days back to campus. The circus tents are up, the tables are out and folks are selling everything from food and jewelry to memberships in some organization.

Of course, there are the Bible thumpers who come every fall and spring to yell at the students. They show up, take turns hollering and if you had the opportunity to get in their line of vision, you probably heard that you are going to Hell.

These people have become a staple of SCSU for a long time now. They are hilarious in their quest to save souls. Hilarious because they insult people like a religious version of Andrew Dice Clay.

The greatest thing uttered by one of these guys happened last year when he saw some kid in a Led Zeppelin t-shirt and told him he was on a "Stairway to Hell." I had tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard.

Some students make the mistake of taking their gibberish to heart. This is basically what they want. It is like the scene in the film "Fight Club;" they are trying to instigate violence toward themselves.

It is not hard to figure out why they do this. If some student attacks them, they get publicity and will more than likely sue the school.

Funny way of saving souls in the name of Jesus. Insulting people to the point of violent reactions for money seems almost like the antithesis of their self-proclaimed faith.

Would Jesus approve of this? I cannot answer that due to the fact the man has been dead for 2,000 years.

I personally think it is a bastardization of a faith. I'm not even religious, but I recognize a con and an insult when I see one. It creates a negative attitude toward the whole based on the stupid actions of a few.

Next time you see them, don't yell back. That is what they want. Laugh at them; laugh like you cannot stop yourself. Drown out their verbal garbage with collective laughter because if they want to act like the court jester, treat them like one.
