The SCSU football team improved to 2-0 with a 16-13 victory over the University of Mary (0-2) last Saturday at Bismarck, N.D.

Sophomore punter/placekicker Brian Cristan went three-for-three on field goals, including the 36-yard game winner with 55 seconds remaining in the game.

SCSU rushed for 141 yards that evening. Junior Kenneth Patrick led the attack with 17 rushes for 80 yards. Freshman Jake Machacek had 13 touches for 62 yards. Junior Adam Luckey ran for 31 yards on eight carries.

Junior quarterback Jon Quesnel went 12-for-28 for 158 yards passing with an interception and a touchdown. Junior Nate Johnson led the way receiving for the Huskies with 68 yards on six receptions and a touchdown. Senior Derek Sedin added 63 yards on only three catches.

Senior linebacker Chris Streit led the team on defense with nine tackles, followed closely by juniors Ryan Kees and Tyler Krueger with seven.

The scoring started off late in the first quarter when Patrick returned a punt to the University of Mary 27-yard line. Four straight rushes by Luckey added 22 yards down to the five. Quesnel then hooked up with Johnson for the touchdown. Cristan nailed the extra point to put the Huskies up seven.

Mary would answer back in the second quarter with a five play 61-yard drive. Quarterback Blair Sandy passed all over the Huskies on the drive and connected with Erik Kruse for the 14-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at seven.

The Huskies started at midfield the next possession and marched down to the two on 12 plays. They were able to convert on two fourth downs on the drive. Quesnel found Johnson for 21 yards on a fourth-and-12 to keep the drive alive.

However, the team decided to kick the field goal on a fourth-and-goal from the two to put Huskies in the lead 10-7.

SCSU would score again later in the second quarter when the Huskies went 42 yards on eight plays to set up another field goal by Cristan, this time from 25 yards out to put the team up 13-7 going into the half.

Mary would knock a 28-yard field goal on their first possession to put the score at 13-10 SCSU. Sandy's first play was a 49-yard completion that set them up at the SCSU 22-yard line. But stingy defense near the goal-line kept Mary from scoring a touchdown.

Mary would tie the game at 13 on another 28-yard field goal. Mary was able to march down to the SCSU eight-yard line, but the Huskies put a halt to the drive when Sandy went one-for-three for two yards passing.

Late in the game, Quesnel led the Huskies on an 11-play 59-yard drive to set the Huskies up at the 19-yard line. Cristan knocked in the 36-yarder with 55 seconds left on the clock, which proved to be the game winner.

SCSU scored four-out of-five times in the red zone, which is a bigger improvement over the three-for-six they had in the opener against Northern State.

Next up for the Huskies is a home tilt with University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 6 p.m. Saturday at Husky Stadium.
