The SCSU men's and women's golf teams started strong this season. The men's team finished first in both tournaments they have participated in thus far, the Husky Invite at Wapicada in Sauk Rapids and the Bemidji State University Invite at Bemidji Country Club.
The Husky team shot scores of 292 and 295 for a two day total of 587 at their most recent tourney at Bemidji.
Their score bested the next closest team, the hosting Beavers, by a commanding 10 strokes.
The top performer was Jake Zilkoski, a junior with rounds of 71 and 73, who helped propel the Huskies to victory.
"My game is coming around, and I'm excited about the team wins," Zilkoski said.
Success on the golf course is not new for Zilkoski. He went to Nationals as a freshman.
Taking second place for the Huskies with a one under 71 was Travis Ross, a sophomore.
"Our goal is of course to try and win all of the tournaments, and personally I'd like to play well. My game is not quite where I want it, but I just need to improve every tournament," Ross said.
Both said their favorite part of golfing for the Huskies is the competition. Zilkoski also gave credit to team chemistry.
"Team camaraderie is a big part of Husky golf. We all get along pretty well," Zilkoski said.
This is a big part of the Huskies continued success over the years.
They won the Division II Northwest Region and also won the North Central Conference in 1994, 2004 and 2005.
"The team could do well, we'll take on the regional first, but I could see this team make it or even win Nationals," Zilkoski said.
Head coach Judy Larkin also sees a lot of potential in this year's squad.
"This is the strongest team we've had in awhile. We have a good team and a good chance to win the regional in spring, which will qualify us for a spot in the National meet," Larkin said.
The team's next meet is Sept. 15-16 at the St. John's University Invitational at Greystone Golf Club in Sauk Centre and Blackberry Ridge in Sartell.
"This (SJU meet) is the beginning of a continually tougher schedule for the team. The competition is going to get harder, so hopefully we will just keep getting better," Larkin said.
The North Central Conference's final championship, because of its disbandment at the end of the season, is Oct. 6, 7 and 8 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The girl's team also started out at the home Husky Invite at Wapicada Sept. 8.
They took a promising third place with a score of 346, bested by Minnesota State, 327, and Winona State, 332.
The best individual finisher for the Huskies was Megan Hagemeir, who shot a 12 over 85.
The next tournament for the women's team is Sept 16 and 17 at the Concordia Invite at Lake Elmo.
