Lord, grant me patience, and could you hurry up?
That was an old prayer my aunt has hung up in her kitchen. For years, I thought about it when I felt my patience wearing thin. I'm not a selfish person, so I think I will pass these words of wisdom on to a few in the NFL.
Some of the biggest NFL news came Tuesday. The Cleveland Browns said all off-season, and pre-season, "Charlie Frye is our guy."
Hopefully, Romeo Crennel means "his team" a little more seriously than he meant "his guy," because after one mediocre half, Frye is out of a job.
The weirdest thing is he didn't even get a chance. Frye went four-for-10 with an interception. Not good, but when you look at Derek Anderson's numbers, one has to wonder why he is now Crennel's guy. Anderson went 13-for-28 with an interception and a fumble. He also got credit for sneaking in a one-yard touchdown toss (the Browns' only score).
Crennel clearly needs a little patience. He has to know they were playing one of the most feared defenses in the NFL, much less a division rival.
Anderson joined a list of four other Browns players who fumbled the ball, nearly all of them lost.
I understand Crennel's job is literally on the chopping block. That sucks, but nobody forced him to go on television and say Frye was his guy; but he did - so mean it.
As many of you know, I have a man-crush on Browns draft pick Brady Quinn. While this does improve his chances of starting by season's end, I'm not convinced that is a good thing.
Look at every great quarterback: Elway, Favre, Peyton; they never really started their rookie seasons, and the games they did play in were usually mediocre to sub-par performances.
The Browns fans love him now because he is a hometown boy with a lot of hype.
What happens next week when the rookie starts four-for-10 with an interception? Will Crennel just throw him to gulls too?
The other big quarterback news this week came attached to a $30 million price tag. The richest contract ever signed by a rookie - JaMarcus Russell.
