Students lack interest in rare opportunities

I couldn't help but stare at the poster on the wall. I must have walked by it a million times and yet I felt compelled to stop, just this once.

It took me 30 seconds to make up my mind after really looking at the poster and internalizing what the content would mean for my future.

I knew I was looking at the real deal, and I wanted to be a part of it. Little did I know how much it would change my life.

The poster was an advertisement for studying abroad.

What I saw before me was an opportunity to do something big with my life. It was a defining moment, and I hardly had time to think it through before making the decision to study abroad.

An aerial photograph of Alnwick Castle is what hooked me. I couldn't think about the small fortune it was going to cost me to travel overseas for two months or that I would be putting the only life I had ever known on hold.

I began wondering what it would take for me to make studying abroad in Alnwick a reality. I went to my class that night after seeing the poster, and I couldn't take my mind off it.

I realized in those few hours that studying abroad was something I wanted to accomplish. I knew then what I needed to do to make it happen.

I started my journey through one of the most important experiences of my life this past summer.

The build-up to the departure date was not what I thought it would be, but by the time it was over, it was everything I had hoped it would be.

There are students who manage to make it through several years of college without ever joining an extra curricular activity.

I think it's a shame, especially because SCSU has opportunities waiting around nearly every corner.

The first year of college can be overwhelming, which is why students aren't expected to get involved in every activity that's offered.

The problem is that so many students walk around campus never really stopping to think about what they can get involved in.
