The SCSU football team forced four turnovers and blocked a field goal as they moved to 3-0 with a 26-16 win over Division III powerhouse No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks (1-1) in front of 3,982 fans Saturday night at Husky Stadium.
The Huskies ended Whitewater's 21-game regular season win streak. The team has been runner up in Division III for two straight years.
Not much was given up on the ground against Whitewater. The Huskies were only able to rush for 37 yards the whole game.
"We didn't do a very good job being able to run the ball," head coach Randy Hedberg said. "They brought an eighth guy down. They had their safety involved in the run game. So that's why we had to throw the ball."
Senior quarterback Mike Hammerseng went 23-for-36 with 240 yards passing and two touchdowns. His favorite target of the night was senior wide receiver Derek Sedin, who had 13 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns.
Sedin was able to get open on many of his routes.
"They kept their backs inside the box," Sedin said. "The corners were coming up and bailing, so we were able to get those little slants."
Whitewater had plenty of success running the football with 193 yards on the ground. Senior running back Justin Beaver led the way for Whitewater with 177 yards rushing. He led Division III football in rushing in 2005.
Senior quarterback Danny Jones went 16-for-36 with 154 yards through the air, with one touchdown and one interception.
Whitewater outgained the Huskies 347-277 in total yardage, but the Huskies converted turnovers into 17 points.
"We knew we were going to be facing a really good team," senior linebacker Aaron LaPointe said. "We came out with a lot of emotion before the game. We wanted to stress being physical, play fast. When that happens, you make big plays."
The Huskies were able to bring pressure on the quarterback all night long.
"We were changing it up and bringing five-man blitzes," LaPointe said. "We changed it up where we were coming from. The D-line did a great job of getting pressure on him throughout most of the game."
