It only comes but once a year, and now the time for it is here.
Of course "it" is not Christmas, but Family Weekend at SCSU.
This year the event will take place Sept. 28-30.
The weekend event list is long, beginning with a continental breakfast in Garvey and a welcome program (with speakers SCSU President Earl Potter and comedian Rob Paravonian, along with several others).
The aviation department will show its flight simulator program again, open skating will be conducted at the National Hockey Center, a football game will be played against Central Washington University, "Shrek 3" will be showing in Atwood, as well as free activities in The Underground; and last but not least, stuff-a-husky. (One per family.)
This is a list of events many people would find hard to pass up, said Rachel Medina, this year's UPB special events coordinator.
Rachel is a fourth-year student majoring in public relations and Spanish, and minoring in travel and tourism.
And if that were not enough, she also puts on major special events on campus (Family Weekend, homecoming, etc).
In Medina's first year as coordinator, she said she has received a lot of support from the university, helping to make the event "more of a university activity than just a UPB one."
While she hopes in the future the event can spread out over the entire weekend, instead of having the majority of events Saturday, she said having few events Friday and Saturday does have its benefits.
"Parents can spend time with their student on Friday and Sunday, and go to the actual events on Saturday," Medina said.
As far as a response, she said it has been "good," putting some of the initial delay on the fact that the informational postcards that were sent out in conjunction with the university ended up arriving late, so that many parents were not receiving them until after the registration deadline.
Even with that minor slipup, however, she says that her office has been receiving calls almost constantly from parents, looking to sign up. It is also possible to register online, at www.scsutickets.com.
Beyond family weekend, Rachel also is busily planning the Homecoming celebration this year (October 8th through the 14th), and she said she is just as enthused about this as she is about Family weekend.
In describing herself, she says that she has "a lot of a school spirit, and a good personality for this job," which certainly rubs off.
Enjoy family weekend this year, and if you see Rachel around, express your thanks for her hard work.
