During this past week, KVSC revealed the trivia theme for this year. "Vote Trivia '08" will have trivia questions based on all things political.
The 50-hour trivia contest will take place Feb. 8 - 10.
The theme was determined over the summer by a committee of staff and volunteers, and was narrowed down from about 12 choices.
The political theme was decided upon because of all the political events approaching this year, like the 2008 presidential election, Minnesota senatorial election and the Republican National Convention scheduled to take place in St. Paul.
The theme has many components; the questions will not just be political, but also historical. It is a broad theme that will also include other topics as well.
"If we wanted to do this theme, this was the year to do it," said Jo McMullen-Boyer, station manager of KVSC.
Once the theme is revealed, teams can register and begin to research and prepare for trivia weekend. Question writers will also begin writing and organizing questions.
During the weekend, questions will be asked on air with various time limits for teams to answer the questions. Registered teams will call in to the radio station to answer. Twenty-four phone lines with volunteers will be available to take answers, and teams can answer as many times as needed for different point values.
The majority of questions are about the theme, but they will also break off into more Trivial Pursuit-type questions.
At the end of the weekend, the first three teams receive prizes.
About 20 of those teams were out of the St. Cloud area; the majority of those being out of state. The out of state teams listen to the radio webcast at kvsc.org.
If interested, register teams early and start researching. Set up a headquarters and make sure to have access to the internet, phones, books, and places to eat and sleep.
"The contest can be daunting but fun. People get addicted and come back every year," McMullen-Boyer said.
