Football

SCSU football (3-1, 0-1) lost 31-0 to No. 15 South Dakota Saturday afternoon at the DakotaDome.

Senior quarterback Mike Hammerseng went 14-for-26 for 100 yards. Red-shirt freshman quarterback Jake Kranz played the fourth quarter in his Huskies debut and went 10-for-24 for 96 yards and an interception.

Junior receiver Zach Stover led the Huskies with 70 yards on a career-high nine receptions. Red-shirt freshman Fred Williams added six catches for 53 yards.

The Huskies had 41 net yards running the ball on just 25 attempts. Red-shirt freshman running back Jake Machacek had five carries for 28 yards to lead the Huskies.

Sophomore quarterback Noah Shepard went 12-for-16 with 259 and three touchdowns for South Dakota. Senior Amos Allen added 127 yards rushing on 17 carries. South Dakota finished the game with 497 yards of total offense, compared to just 237 for the Huskies.

Jordan Murphy was Shepard's favorite target with six receptions for 166 yards and two touchdowns. A bulk of Murphy's yards came on an 80-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter to give the Coyotes a 14-0 lead.

South Dakota scored four touchdowns on its first five possessions to put the game out of reach quickly. The last touchdown was a 15-play, 98-yard drive that took just over eight and a half minutes off the clock. The score was 28-0 at the half.

Frank Leibfarth nailed a 52-yard field goal in the third to make the score 31-0.

The Huskies look to rebound as Central Washington comes to town at 6 p.m. Saturday at Husky Stadium.

Volleyball

The SCSU volleyball team is still in search of their elusive first conference win as they dropped two matches on the road against South Dakota (16-1, 1-1 NCC) and Nebraska-Omaha (8-5, 1-2).

The Huskies fell in three straight games (30-20, 30-18, 30-15) Friday evening against South Dakota.

Junior outside hitter Emily Baldwin led the Huskies with 13 kills and 14 digs.

Junior libero Andreana Pieper led the Huskies with 20 digs.

Two players for South Dakota had more than 20 kills in the match. Junior Kathleen Hruska used all of her 6-foot-2-inch body into 27 kills.

The Huskies traveled across the border to No. 18 Nebraska-Omaha where the Huskies fell 3-1 (30-24, 28-30, 30-12, 30-19) Saturday.

Baldwin finished the match with eight kills and led the team defensively with 12 digs. Senior RaeAnne Stanley matched Baldwin with eight kills. Pieper had 11 digs, which raises her career total to 978 as a Husky.

First-year Ashley Shields led the Huskies with 12 kills.

SCSU returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Minnesota-Crookston.
