That was the case Friday night at Husky Stadium as the Huskies collected their first conference loss 1-0 to Augustana (5-3-1, 1-1-0 NCC).
Senior midfielder Tina Harris recorded her third goal of the season in the 51st minute for the lone tally in the game.
Augustana played the long ball strategy all night. It paid off in a big way when freshman midfielder Katie Shandri threaded the Huskies defense with a through pass to hit a streaking Harris.
The defense was able to get a foot on it, but not enough to disrupt the well-placed pass.
Huskies sophomore goaltender Elizabeth Kelly came out to cut down the angle, but Harris whistled the ball past a diving Kelly low to the far corner to put Augustana on top.
Kelly finished the contest with eight saves, equal to her counterpart, junior Lisa Jarovski. Augustana had a slight edge, 15-13, in total shots attempted.
"We had a really difficult time adjusting to what they were doing in the middle of the field," head coach Stephanie McGuinness said. "We knew what they were going to do, but they did it a little bit different than what we thought. It took us a long time to figure that out."
Because the team took time to adjust to the method of Augustana's play, the Huskies were not able to get much rhythm in the first half.
"In this game, it kind of panics you a little bit," McGuinness said. "You start to sit back and play a little more fearful."
The Huskies adjusted to their opponent late in the half and evened up shots on goal at three by the time the scoreless first half ended.
"At halftime, I think we came out right away and did a good job," McGuinness said. "We knew what we were trying to do defensively, so now we can actually push through and play a little more offense."
The Huskies had plenty of chances to tie the game. The best came in the 83rd minute with a corner kick from junior midfielder Ashley Herold.
The kick bent into the box and rattled around when sophomore forward Chelsey Scheller drilled the ball toward the net. It passed sprawling Augustana keeper Jarovski, but hit a defender on the goal line to keep the Huskies scoreless.
