WASHINGTON -- On Wednesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates asked Congress to approve a budget of nearly $190 billion to pay for the wars taking place in Iraq and Afghanistan for 2008.
The request is a third larger than initially planned, and Gates said the additional money will be necessary to buy vehicles to protect troops from roadside bombs and update soldiers' equipment that has been worn down among other issues.
