The SCSU volleyball team (7-10, 0-3 NCC) got its first road victory of the season Tuesday evening 3-1 (30-32, 31-29, 30-15, 30-25) in a non-conference affair over Minnesota-Crookston.

"(The team) did a nice job," head coach Patricia Mickow said. "For us to finally get things that we were working on in practice to happen just a little bit more often, that's what we are looking for."

First-year outside hitter Ashley Shields recorded a career-high 20 kills, along with five block assists. Junior outside hitter Emily Baldwin recorded 18 kills, and junior middle hitter Kelly Lynn Isaacson also pitched in with 11 kills.

Even though the team was victorious, Mickow knows there are things to work on.

"By no means would I say our team is consistent right now," she said. "Consistency is what we are looking for. That's what's helping us out."

Mickow said she believes the road victory is a step in the right direction.

"It's huge for morale. We didn't get home until two o'clock in the morning, and they got up and went to class and came here," Mickow said. "They gave us an hour and 50 minutes (at Wednesday's practice) of good, hard work. They gave us everything they had left in them, and it makes it easier after a win. It makes it easier to work harder when you get a win on the road."

The offense mainly went through first-year setter Jennifer Waterman, who recorded 42 set assists in the match.

Junior libero Andreana Pieper recorded 21 digs in the match. Waterman had 16 and Baldwin recorded 14. Isaacson led the team with 10 block assists.

The first game was point-for-point, but Crookston pulled out the narrow 32-30 victory.

The Huskies were not phased by the first game defeat and tied up the match at one game apiece, 31-29 into the intermission.

"We had the momentum after winning the second game," Mickow said. "We talked in the locker room. Everyone was on the same page and fired up and ready to go out there and get another one. That's nice the team had the ability to shut the door on a team."

SCSU came out on fire the next game, winning decisively 30-15.

"When they served, we just controlled the ball," Mickow said. "When the ball is passed in a good position in front of the 10 foot line, we have all kinds of options. I think (Crookston) they thought they were going to serve us off the floor, and that wasn't the case."

The fourth game was close to the wire, but the Huskies pulled a late run to win 30-25.

The Huskies have a trip to Marshall to play No. 4 Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.

"We are really going to have to control the ball," Mickow said. "The other thing that is going to have to happen is that we are going to have to serve aggressively to get them out-of-system."
