In sports, energy comes from many sources: kinetic, gravitational, solar and atomic can all be found in science textbooks. The SCSU Sports Band prefers to make an entirely new form of energy - contagious energy.
The SCSU Sports Band has become an integral part of the Husky sport experience. In only their second full season, the sports band commits themselves to musical excellence at every performance.
Brent Gahlon, section leader of the sports band, said, "We strive to bring a fun musical experience to each game."
"They really have brought a game day experience to home games." head football coach Randy Hedberg said.
The sports band is comprised of members ranging from music majors to casual music enthusiasts from different majors. The band is made up of all ages. Young freshmen, seasoned seniors and alumni create the energetic group.
"We bring pure chaos to games. There's just a crowd of us, and we get crazy," Gahlon said.
Before the sports band was re-assembled in spring of 2005, SCSU had not had a sports band for many decades.
The Sports Band performs at many home events. Football, basketball, volleyball, and hockey games have all been known to include the boisterous performances by this high-energy group.
The sports band has been greeted with mixed reaction by sports fans. Brandon Doyle former president of the Dog Pound Club said, " Sometimes they are good and sometimes I don't really like them."
"At hockey games they don't always respect the traditions that students have in place like playing the 'Ole' song' [Mankato's goal scoring theme song] instead of our normal songs," said Doyle. "But at football games and stuff they seem to bring a real energy with them."
Art Busse a senior hockey fan said, "They make a lot of noise at games, which can distract from the game."
Coaches at SCSU enjoy the sparks that the band have brought with them
"They [Sports Band] definitely bring an atmosphere with them, I've heard a lot of good things from them. The players and crowd seem to really get into it," said Hedberg.
The band prepares weekly for their performances in upbeat fun practices. The idea is that if practices are fun, then the performances will carry that energy into the crowd.
"It is fun to play some more modern music once in awhile," said Gahlon whom is a music performance major. "I like playing some of the same stuff you can hear on the radio once in awhile."
A little energy with a splash of chaos is being brought to SCSU events courtesy of the Husky Sports Band. Sports fans looking to catch the band's feverish energy need only to show up and listen.
