WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tuesday, the House overwhelmingly passed legislation to extend new protections to journalists and their confidential sources.
For the first time, the shield law would limit the ability of federal authorities to force reporters to testify against unidentified sources and documents used in their reporting.
The bill passed 398 to 21. A vote for the bill was cast by 176 Republicans and 222 Democrats, which far exceeded the two-thirds votes needed to override a veto.
