Huskies let second game slip

For the Huskies 21st year in Division I college hockey, their schedule gave them a great present they would not want to return.

That present was an opening weekend cupcake in the mold of the Canisius College Golden Griffins.

As SCSU began to digest the team, they tried to woof it down too far and ended up regurgitating part of it in the form of a 3-3 tie Saturday.

Everything went as planned in Friday's 7-0 shutout. Saturday's game was going well into the second period, and it all came crashing down as the team ended with an embarrassing 3-3 tie.

A team as bad as Canisius salvaging a point from a weekend series inside an energized National Hockey Center has to have the squad disappointed and worried.

They failed to sweep the Atlantic Hockey bottom dweller, which happens to reside in America's version of hell frozen over in Buffalo, N.Y.

Buffalo, in fact, is the symbol of losing and choking throughout all of sports. The Sabres squandered possibly the most talented team in the past 10 NHL seasons last year, while the Buffalo Bills are one of two teams to be 0-4 in the Superbowl.

Basically the only winning entity to come from the rundown city of Buffalo was the Buffalo Wing.

With the WCHA so far ahead in recruiting and talent, even a tie with one of the 5-year-old Atlantic Hockey powerhouses would have been a disgrace.

Yes, there must be a large portion of the credit put up on Golden Griffins' senior goalie Bryce Luker, who looked godly in his 43-save performance, but there should be much blame to go around.

Most people will work to criticize Husky goalie BJ O'Brien for the event ending in a tie. And while O'Brien desperately would like his two five-hole goals back, the cause of the tie should not be on his shoulders.

He was making his first appearance in live action in more than a year. The only other time he made his way into the crease was for one period in an exhibition game.

His nerves had to be off the charts, and the pressure of his first collegiate start had to be immense.
