The first two games were closely fought matches. The Huskies and Vikings were tied at 26 before SCSU took over the game, winning 30-26 and 30-27. SCSU came out firing after the intermission to dominate the third game 30-21.
"We needed to take control of the game," head volleyball coach Patricia Mickow said at intermission. "We needed to shut the door on the opponent."
When the Huskies started off the match down early on, Mickow used a timeout to talk to her team.
"I reminded the team on what we are doing, to work on what we did in practice," Mickow said.
Freshman Ashley Shields had two of the last four points to finish off the first game. Shields said Mickow has been helping her work on her shots in practice.
Shields started the second game with an ace. This was her first game serving because of the injuries to the team. Shields usually plays at the net.
In the second game, the Huskies jumped out to an early lead and had to use a timeout to stop the Vikings from coming back. SCSU used their last timeout of the game when they were down 21-24.
The team responded to come back with three straight points to tie the game. Valley City State used both of their timeouts late in the game, but did not respond like SCSU did.
Freshman Jennifer Waterman had all three of her blocks in the second game. Her final block was the game winning point.
The final game was never in doubt for the Huskies. Their largest lead of the game was 11. The Vikings made a late charge back, but the margin was too large. Shields finished the match with a thunderous kill.
Waterman finished the match with 37 set assists and eight kills. During this game, Waterman set SCSU's first year set assist record with 877. The previous record was 859.
"Jen was all over the place," Shields said.
Waterman said she was moving around the court real well.
Mickow said Waterman has been working hard in practice with all of the hitters on the team.
Shields led the team with 12 kills followed by junior Kelly Isaacson with 11 kills and junior Emily Baldwin with 10 kills.
Junior Andreana Pieper had 23 digs for the evening, increasing her season-record total to 465.
Waterman said the team needs to keep progressing because there are tough NCC games coming up.
Mickow said this sweep victory is good for the team's morale. This is the first time in two years the Huskies (1-5 NCC, 9-14 overall) passed the eight wins mark.
The Huskies have eight more games left in the regular season. Next, the team travels to North Dakota for a NCC game Saturday.
The Huskies beat North Dakota earlier this season, winning three straight games against the Sioux Oct. 5 at Halenbeck Hall.
