Wayne State (1-12-2, 0-6-0 NSIC) picked up their first win of the season against a struggling SCSU (4-10-1, 2-6-0 NCC) soccer team in a 2-0 shutout.

"We didn't come to win," head coach Stephanie McGuinness said. "We didn't put in the effort today, and it showed."

Wayne State was originally scheduled to play the Huskies Sept. 1, but canceled due to a contagious skin rash that affected their team.

"It's sometimes tough to schedule in make-up games," McGuinness said.

The Huskies were forced to play two games inside a 20-hour span.

"That is really no excuse for our poor play," senior forward Elizabeth Solberg said.

A road trip to Duluth started the weekend poorly for a struggling offense that managed only one shot on goal in a 3-0 loss to the Bulldogs.

"We didn't perform up and down the field," McGuinness said.

The Huskies did manage to out shoot the Wildcats of Wayne State 12-9. Most of the shots came in the later part of the second half.

The tempo seemed to pick up, creating plenty of break away shooting opportunities.

Wayne State broke the stalemate at the 77 minute mark with a curving shot from Gena Romano, which found the top left corner of the net.

"We didn't play as a team today, " said goaltender Elizabeth Kelly who finished the day with three saves. "When you are getting shelled out there, defensive mistakes are bound to happen and they did."

With time winding down Lindsey Sather got substituted back into the game and as soon as her cleats hit the turf she got a break away chance to tie the game up. Some defensive hustle by the Wildcats defense broke up the play and led to an errant shot.

"We had chances today," McGuinness said. "We just didn't find the back of the net."

Moments later the Wildcats iced the game with a free kick that deflected into the right side of the net.

Coach McGuinness got very animated in the post-game team discussion.

"We didn't have people out there who wanted to win," McGuinness said. "We have a lot of talented people who aren't playing like they want it."

The Huskies won't have any easier time finding "it" as they continue the season with three consecutive away matches against conference teams. They finish the regular season at home against Duluth.
