Former kindergarten teacher Chris Carrabba will be bringing a solo version of his band Dashboard Confessional to SCSU at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday in Halenbeck Hall.

Carrabba, 32, began his career as a musician by teaching himself the guitar. After forgoing plans to join the military, and finding himself studying education at Florida Atlantic University, Carrabba joined up as the vocalist of the post-hardcore Christian outfit Further Seems Forever.

After deciding to leave the group, Carrabba focused on creating a more simple sound and picked up his guitar and began strumming.

The ensuing project became Dashboard Confessional, a band that's probably best known from the first wave of emo and the hit songs "Screaming Infidelities," a tale of the disintegration of a relationship, or "Hands Down," a sweeping anthem about love.

Carrabba has been touring and writing as Dashboard since 2000, wearing his heart on his sleeve next to his many tattoos.

Since the debut of the first Dashboard LP "The Place You Have Come To Fear The Most," Carrabba has slowly built up a loyal following throughout the years.

When emo exploded, he was at the forefront as the poster boy. Since then, he's branched out and managed to consistently change his sound and move out in new directions.

His fourth album, "Dusk and Summer," veered away from the one-man show feeling of his previous material. The album was more layered, and in place of the quiet coffeehouse vibe was a sweeping instrumental backing and riffing guitars that gave it more of an arena rock feel.

With four previous albums, and a hit song on the "Spider-Man 2" soundtrack, this October saw the launch of the fifth Dashboard album, "The Shade of the Poison Trees."

The disc was recorded in March 2007 and marks a return to the singer-songwriter oriented material Carrabba began with, showcasing his ability to get the most out of an acoustic guitar.

Sunday's concert is one of many stops on the fall tour behind Dashboard Confessional's latest release.

Despite the location in a large gymnasium, the concert Sunday will be an intimate show in that it'll be Carrabba, his guitar and his well-crafted and heart-wrenching lyrics.

Opening bands for Sunday's show will be Illinois piano alternative rock group Augustana, and John Ralston, a Tennessee native who has worked with former Wilco member Jay Bennet.

Tickets for Sunday night's performance are still available. They range from $19 for SCSU students with a valid ID, to $22-$24 for the public and staff, depending on what level seating is chosen.

Tickets can be obtained from scsutickets.com.
