Every major enrollment category at SCSU has risen this year.
"It's very exciting to see the numbers increase and the campus become more diverse," said Mahmoud Saffari, associate vice president for enrollment at SCSU.
SCSU enrollment is at 16,882 students, up more than 4 percent from last year's 16,172.
These totals include high school students taking college courses.
Entering freshmen numbers have increased 5 percent since 2006.
Student transfers increased from 2006 by 7 percent. The number of entering freshmen and transfers this year is 3,854, up 5 percent from last year, and up 12.4 percent from 2003.
Since Saffari started working as the associate vice president for enrollment at SCSU, his top priority has been to create diversity on campus.
SCSU has enrolled an all-time high of 1,144 students of color, an increase of 409 more domestic students from last year, and a 79.8 percent increase since 2003, Saffari said.
International students are also heading to SCSU in record numbers, with a total of 1,057 international students this year, which is 6.3 percent of the student body.
Saffari credits these increases to the diversification of the staff and recruiters at SCSU and the admissions department.
"There was only one person of color working in the office," Saffari said, "but now we have people on staff who are African American, Latina and Hmong, who provide us with the knowledge we need for different cultures."
Another program to draw students to SCSU is the Yield Event, which was implemented three years ago, Saffari said.
The event is for students who have been recruited and applied to the college. It provides them and their parents
the opportunity to visit the campus and get a first-hand look at what the university has to offer.
"In the competitive recruiting process, the recruiters want to recruit well- informed students," said Saffari, "The recruiters must be honest and sincere during the process."
Parents and recruited students can ask questions to a panel of professors, tour the campus, and attend a sporting event.
When the Event first started there was only one Event opportunity, but with the increased demand it has grown every year. This year the number of Yield Events will increase to eight.
With increased enrollment, the university has to ensure that can accommodate every student enrolled at SCSU.
"The student is the number one priority," said Saffari, "and we are making sure there are enough classes, seats, and professors for the enrolled students." He also stated that, "Employees of the university are here as a service to the students."
Saffari sees the university being to a campus that will be between 16,000 and 17,000 students. His aims are to increase the student population, diversity, and also to maintain the present student population attending St. Cloud State University.
