Three public universities have been honored for leadership and innovation in teacher education.

SCSU, the University of Northern Colorado and Western Carolina University were named the 2007 recipients of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).

AASCU's Christa McAuliffe award is named in honor of the teacher who lost her life in the 1986 Challenger disaster.

McAuliffe was a graduate from Framingham State College in Massachusetts and Bowie State University in Maryland, both AASCU members.

"The St. Cloud State University College of Education, which trains 500 professionals for the nation's schools every year, has been dedicated to the preparation of high quality teachers, administrators, counselors and other school and community professionals since our founding in 1869," said SCSU president Earl Potter.

The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in teacher education programs and to advance the field of teacher education by identifying promising practices and critical issues related to measuring the impact of certain teachers on pupil learning.

SCSU is being recognized specifically for its Teacher Quality Enhancement Partnership, utilizing co-teaching during student-teaching experiences, for which many people have contributed time and energy.

"This is really a team effort. We could not do this without the contributions of many talented people," said Nancy Bacharach, director of teacher quality enhancement and professor of teacher development, who submitted the application for this award last March.

Significant contributions have been made by the College of Education's co-teaching team: the afore mentioned, Nancy Bacharach, Teresa Washut Heck, coordinator of co-teaching and associate professor of health, physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science; and Kathryn Dahlberg, Teacher Quality Enhancement, Research Analyst. "As a team, we've worked very hard; it wouldn't be anything that any one individual could really do on their own, it really has been a team effort to get where we are, Bacharach said.
