The Career Services Center and Students in Free Enterprise hosted a "Tips from Employers Panel" at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Lady's Slipper Room in Atwood.

Three panelists were scheduled, but Teresa Bell, a college relationship and employment representative for TCF Bank, was delayed due to traffic.

The event continued with a panel of two consisting of Rebecca A. Bot, a college relations manager for the Schwan's Food Company, and Becky Krekelberg, a recruiting supervisor for Enterprise.

Associate director of Career Services Andrew Ditlevson led the discussion, during which students asked the following questions about what employers look for in applicants.

How do I sell myself to employers?

Both panelists agreed that listing previous experiences and how they relate to the job you are interested in is very important.

Bot said one way to get an idea of what skills are needed for the job is to talk to recruiters and employees of the company or attend seminars before going to an interview.

"Talk to me at a career fair," Bot said. "Keep in touch with recruiters."

Ditlevson agreed students should take advantage of career fairs, do their homework online before interviews and follow up online soon after.

Krekelberg said it is important not to skip information that may be important on resumes, but not to list things from five or 10 years ago.

The panelists also agreed that a cover letter is not necessary, but if they receive a cover letter addressed directly to them, it makes a difference.

What stands out to an employer on a resume?

Both panelists said stating your objective is key.

"If you have an objective, what is it?" Krekelberg said.

Specifying what type of job you are looking for and why you are qualified for that job will get the attention of recruiters.

"Objective helps me decipher if it is an intern candidate or full-time candidate," Bot said.

Other things the panelists said were important to include are your education, graduation date, major, previous experience, activities, leadership roles, athletics and GPA.
