SCSU students don't take advantage of campus life

After covering many events and activities on campus, this board has realized how under-utilized these events are.

For example, about 50 people attended the Al Franken speech.

We would expect a lot more people to come to an event in which a possible Minnesota senator spent more than an hour of his time to talk with students about certain issues that most colleges students want to here about.

Maybe SCSU students were unaware of the event happening, and maybe there are a lot of Republicans that go to school here, but either way, it was a weak turn out.

Also, people from the Chronicle who covered the career fair earlier this month thought it was helpful and would have been beneficial to many students, but it got done about an hour earlier than planned because a lack of people participated in it.

Then, the president and CEO of Wells Fargo and alumnus John Stumpf came to speak at Ritsche Auditorium, and it was packed.

But just when it appeared people cared about what was going on, a number of students said they came because their business teachers made them, or they were given extra credit for participating in the event.

It is pretty pathetic that people had to be forced to listen to someone who is probably one of the most successful people to come out of SCSU.

And here is the kicker.

Stumpf was a very comedic guy. He was not boring to listen to, and a lot could have been learned from his speech.

These types of campus activities are offered all the time for students, so if SCSU students don't utilize these opportunities, then they should not complain about the lack of activities or bad mouth events they never in fact attended.
