Election Day in Central Minnesota was Nov. 6.
Citizens headed to the polls to cast their vote on several local issues, including mayoral races in four cities, 28 school board seats and 13 area city council seats.
Among SCSU students to vote was Kati Axelson, a 21-year-old junior. Axelson said she feels voting is a must.
"It's what the country's based on - democracy," Axelson said.
For students living on or near campus, the election was particularly important, as the Ward 1 city council seat was up for grabs.
Running was Garner Moffat, an SCSU student who will graduate next spring with a bachelor's degree in community development, and Dave Masters, who has been a teacher for District 742 for 26 years.
Masters won the seat, and is also a board member of the St. Cloud Historic Neighborhood and Preservation Association.
Masters will be representing Ward 1, the district which includes the South Side of St. Cloud and much of the area near campus.
Among his many goals, Masters said he hopes to balance the needs of student renters with those of permanent residents who live within the Ward 1 district.
"I want to be open and available to students and residents," Masters said.
Yet the newly elected member of city council has his fair share of concerns.
Among these concerns, Masters said there are a disproportionately high number of rental properties in Ward 1, about 85 percent.
He is also concerned that Ward 1 continues to maintain the highest level of police calls in the city, a fact which does nothing to promote home ownership.
Noise, excessive garbage in yards and late night
The college has a big impact on the south side," Masters said.
But despite problems, he feels the university has a lot to offer, such as diversity and art.
Masters, who owns a south-side home built in 1891, feels that because Ward 1 boasts some of the oldest, most historic buildings in the city, students and owners can work together to preserve it, in order to keep it in place for future generations.
