Musharraf resigns army chief role

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - The president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf resigned as army chief Wednesday before he is to be sworn in for a second term as president Thursday.
Musharraf overthrew the elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1999 and appointed himself president in 2001.
He was re-elected to another five-year term Oct. 6 and the Supreme Court was about to overturn the vote, but Musharraf declared a state of emergency and suspended the constitution Nov. 3.
