Fourteenth ranked SCSU men's basketball held off Minnesota State-Moorhead with late free throws made down the stretch.

The Huskies scored their last 12 points off free throws in the last two minutes to beat the Dragons 80-74. SCSU made more free throws than Moorhead attempted, going 26-34 from the line.

"Free throws are huge," head coach Kevin Schlagel said. "I have done some studying and found out two-thirds of our games have been decided by a few positions. We have been average shooting free throws last year."

The game started off back and forth. SCSU's first lead of the game came when Brett Carmichael made a lay-up assisted by Dusty Wabiszewski.

Dragons Jamal O'Neal took back the lead on the next possession by hitting a jumper. Taylor Witt tied the game at 13 with an old fashioned three-point play.

Two free throws by Wabiszewski gave the Huskies a lead at 23-22, which they never relinquished. The Huskies went on an 8-2 run for 3:45 after Wabiszewski's free throws.

"The first half was a quick pace. They went small on us and they have some guys that can shoot," Wabiszewski said.

The Huskies went into half time with a 42-32 lead.

SCSU came out of the half with an 11-4 run. The lead got as large as 19 points in the second half.

The Dragons did not quit. They chipped away at the deficit by going on a 13-3 run, shrinking the lead to nine. Schlagel slowed the charge with a timeout.

The Dragons got as close as three down the stretch, but the Huskies free throw shooting sealed the win.

"We are playing like a team with a lot of assists and pressure defense," Wabiszewski said. "Pushing the tempo works in our favor."

Schlagel said the team needs to be more consistent on both sides of the ball. It starts with his team establishing an up-tempo defense.

Drees led the Huskies with 23 points off 7-14 from the field. Justyn Burgess matched him with 23 points for Moorhead.

Carmichael had 14 and Wabiszewski had 10, all from free throws.

With the win, the Huskies improved to 6-0 for the season. Their next game is at home against Upper Iowa Dec. 5.

"We don't know much of Upper Iowa other than they will be athletic with a bunch of new guys," Schlagel said. "We still have time to formulate a game plan."

The team starts their last run of conference play in the NCC against North Dakota Jan. 10 at home.
