Husky sports prepare for new conference

For 86 years the NCC has provided triumphs and heartbreaks.

Closing the final pages of the NCC, SCSU looks forward to a new Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

Fall sports re-cap

The SCSU soccer team ended their season 5-12-2 (NCC 3-8-1). The team struggled all season with a very young roster of talented, but inexperienced players. Elizabeth Kelly (goaltender) started the season with back-to-back NCC Player of the Week titles. Nine players were given conference academic awards.

SCSU's golf team had one of the best seasons in the fall. The men's team posted four first place finishes, and one fifth place. They also won the final NCC championship. The women's team finished in the top 10 three out of their four regular season events.

The volleyball team ended with a 10-21 record (2-10 NCC).

"The atmosphere wasn't like it was a losing season," head coach Patricia Mickow said. "We just kept getting better."

The team's only senior, RaeAnne Stanley, graduates, leaving a lot of experience returning for next year's season, including the all-time digs record holder Andreana Pieper, and Emily Baldwin.

"It's not just great for them as upper classmen it's great for our freshmen to have something to look towards," Mickow said.

The Husky volleyball team was one of only three schools in NCC to play freshmen regularly.

The Husky's football squad, after a promising 3-0 start, fizzled to finish 4-7 overall (1-7 NCC).

"We had 29 turnovers this season. That's almost double what we normally have," head coach Randy Hedberg said. "We need more consistency out of our offense."

NSIC preview

SCSU, along with UMD, MSU and Augustana, are joining the NSIC.

The NSIC currently consists of Bemidji State, Northern State University, Southwest Minnesota State University, Wayne State University, Winona State University, Morris State University, University of Mary, Upper-Iowa University, Concordia St. Paul and U of M Crookston.
