JAKARTA, Indonesia - Former President Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for 32 years, died Sunday at the age of 86.

While he was corrupt and slaughtered thousands, the United States backed him because he was opposed to communism during the peak of the Cold War.

His campaign collapsed in 1998 after the country's economy began to spiral out of control.
